Internet in Türkiye: what travelers need to know before the trip

Blog5 min read

In short

The easiest way to stay connected in Türkiye is to install an eSIM before you travel, so your phone connects the moment you land in Istanbul, Antalya or Trabzon without hunting for a local SIM. On short trips, don’t worry about the foreign phone registration rule, which only kicks in after 120 days. And if your trip combines Türkiye with Europe or the UK, one plan is enough.

Mobile networks in Türkiye

Türkiye has three mobile networks: Turkcell, Vodafone and Türk Telekom. Whatever SIM you use there, whether local, eSIM or roaming on your original SIM, it will connect to one of these networks. Coverage in cities is generally good, and the signal may weaken on some mountain roads and in remote villages, as in any country, so if you’re heading up to Uzungöl or the plateaus around Trabzon, download your maps before you set off.

The 120-day rule and phone registration

120

days without registration

Türkiye requires phones brought from abroad to be registered (by IMEI number) if they’re used on its networks for a long time. You can use your phone for up to 120 days without registering, whether roaming or with a Turkish SIM. After that, the device must be registered and a high fee paid, which changes every year; otherwise it’s blocked from Turkish networks. For a tourist on a one- or two-week trip, this rule doesn’t matter in practice. Anyone staying for months to study or work should plan for it from the start.

Why you'll need the internet there more than you expect

Istanbul’s old lanes all look alike, and maps will be your constant companion. Many shopkeepers and drivers don’t speak Arabic or English, so a translation app solves many situations in seconds. You’ll also need internet to order a ride, book a Bosphorus tour and send the hotel location to the people with you. On family trips, it’s easy for the group to split up in the bazaar, and sharing your live location on WhatsApp saves you a lot of worry.

How much data do you need for a week in Türkiye?

Data usage (estimates)

Maps and navigation5 to 20 MB per hour
WhatsApp voice call0.5 to 1 MB per minute
Video call5 to 10 MB per minute
Standard-quality video0.5 to 1 GB per hour
HD video1.5 to 3 GB per hour

If you mainly use maps, messaging and voice calls, a medium allowance is usually enough. If you post stories and videos every day or share your connection with family members, an unlimited plan is more comfortable, keeping in mind its daily fair-use limit.

A Türkiye eSIM from 22SIM

22SIM has a plan for Türkiye, and a plan combining Europe with the UK and Türkiye for those continuing on to Europe, since Türkiye isn’t part of the European Union plan. Choose your plan and pay the way that suits you, including KNET, mada and installments with Deema, then install the eSIM in under a minute before you travel. When you land, turn on data roaming for the eSIM line, and your internet works while your number and WhatsApp stay as they are.

Istanbul is waiting, and your internet is ready before you arrive.

Before you travel

Before you go

  • Install your eSIM over Wi-Fi at home.
  • Download offline maps of Istanbul and the cities you'll visit.
  • Save your hotel address written in Turkish and show it to the driver.
  • Install a translation app and download Turkish in it.
  • Bring a power bank, since maps and the camera drain the battery fast.
  • On arrival: set the eSIM as your data line and turn on data roaming for it.

Frequently asked questions

Not on short trips. Registration is only required if the phone is used on Turkish networks for more than 120 days.

It works wherever there’s network coverage. Cities are generally covered, and the signal may weaken on some mountain roads, so download your maps in advance.

No. If your trip combines Türkiye with European countries, choose the Europe, UK and Türkiye plan.

Yes. Your original SIM stays in your phone, and WhatsApp works on your usual number over the eSIM’s internet.

A day or two before you travel, while connected to Wi-Fi, and don’t delete it from your settings after installing.

The verdict

Türkiye is one of the easiest destinations to stay connected: three networks cover the cities, and there’s no phone registration on short trips. Install your eSIM before you travel, download maps for mountain areas, and choose the Europe, UK and Türkiye plan if your trip goes further.
